Royalty Route

Ganghwa, Gwangju, Gimpo, Seoul, Suwon, Hwaseong – A Historical Journey through Seoul and the Capital Region

The Royalty Route stretches from Seoul, the capital of South Korea, through Suwon in Gyeonggi-do Province, and down to Hwaseong along the southwestern coast of Gyeonggi-do Province. This route encompasses royal palaces, shrines dedicated to the spirits of kings, mountain fortresses that protected the capital, meticulously planned new cities, and royal tombs, showcasing the breadth of our technology, art, rituals, daily culture, and spiritual world.
Seoul, which has been inhabited since prehistoric times, was known as Wiryeseong or Hanseong during the Baekje period and as Hanyang during the Joseon Dynasty. Having remained the capital from the Joseon Dynasty to the present day, Seoul is a condensed representation of Korean history, especially highlighting the core of Joseon history. With five palaces, Seoul is rich in stories related to the royal family, and these tales extend to Suwon, Hwaseong, Gimpo, and Ganghwa. The route connecting Seoul to the surrounding capital area links inside and outside the city walls, where layers of time reveal the grandeur, culture, prosperity, and moments of crisis of the royal court. Bronze Age tombs, the first palace of the Joseon Dynasty, shrines dedicated to the kings’ spirits, royal tombs, and temples that preserved historical records vividly illustrate the history of the Korean Peninsula from prehistoric times to the present.
