Gyeongju, Andong – Walking through the Spirit of Korea

The ancient kingdom of Silla never moved its capital throughout its thousand-year history. Gyeongju, which served as the capital for a millennium, still holds traces of Silla’s legacy. The saying that you can find artifacts simply by digging is no joke in Gyeongju, where excavation beyond the second underground level is not even attempted. The discovery of new relics and artifacts suggests that Silla might be speaking to us once again. The sheer longevity of these ancient remnants makes them special, and the expansion of emotional experiences before cultural heritage is closely related to the ‘spirit’ embedded within. Thus, exploring places rich in both tangible and intangible heritage is a way of reconnecting with the spirit passed down from the past.
Andong, with its strong pride in tradition, is home to both the scholarly culture of Confucian scholars and the folk culture rich in humor and satire. Visiting Andong is akin to experiencing the roots of Korean spiritual culture and Confucianism. This mystical journey is framed by two cities with distinct attractions: the thousand-year-old capital of Gyeongju and the cultural heart of Korean spirituality, Andong.
